Futuristic Vehicle
Refine Illustrations - Informative Illustrations, Graphics Design Diploma
The final project for the Refine Illustrations unit, this was to create both an interior
& exterior of a futuristic-themed vehicle.. This was certainly quite the challenge.
Development
Visual Research
Observing what has already been done was the first stage undertaken for this project, and this included both man-made, as well as natural objects for inspiration. The ultimate goal here was to look closely at what fundamental design that these 3D forms all had, and from here I was able to gradually come up with something myself..
After looking through exteriors, it was then necessary to observe how these objects looked like on the inside, though I noticed that the exteriors were more creative overall..
Early Sketch Development
After a substantial amount of soaking up what the 3D forms consisted of, it was now time to create something, so I started off with 2D drawings (as can be seen in the top left). This is important since they're similar to elevation views of a 3D object, & the side views are typically the largest more prominent portion of the design..
In accordance to my lecturer's advice, I attempted to use the "3D blocking out" method for creating useful 3D perspective-correct experimentation with various shapes, though to be honest, I was far more confident sticking with isometric..
As can be seen in the right picture, I gradually added more details to my designs as I moved throughout the exploration processes..
Mash Up Exploration
A lot of directions had been tried by this stage & I still was not 100% sure what to do, so it made sense to "mash up" some reference material as clip art & create a collage out of it to see where that would take me... After that, the outcome was traced.
The 3rd picture was the process where I then tried really hard to extract the best parts of this stage.
Sketch Refinements
The previous stage really helped to come up with more developed design options, lots of details & polish was applied to the final design contenders, and it was now when I realised I liked a bit of each of the design options remaining, so the final chosen design became a hybrid of various bits..
3D Computer Model / Render
At last, it was time for my 3D modelling skills to lend a helping hand! Based on all I'd done to this point, I was ready to create a 3D rendition of my sketch, but with further improved polish & better perspective...
This was especially useful for figuring out how to create warped / refracted reflections on the wind screens & windows, since the surface is not flat, & showing an environment in these places really helps to showcase the material..
Colour Tests
Colour pencils were my choice of medium for rendering this artwork by hand, so it became a necessary stage to try out which colours specifically would work best for each given area.. As can be seen on the right hand side, the colour values were written while I compared them..
Interior Sketch
This drawing is this insides of the vehicle.
Next to it is a colour test.
