Refine 2D Design - Poster, Graphics Design Diploma

TYPE Poster was all about exploration & experimentation! My lecturer insisted that I spend plenty of time to look into many different things to see how ideas could evolve into new things, it was a very relaxed project, with the intention of minimising pressure to nurture creativity.

Development

Visual Research

The first task was to observe reference materials in order to be aided with a sense of exploration & eventually direction for where I should be headed..

Shortly after being given the brief, many ideas came to mind for various materials to get better acquainted with, in the hope to discover new possibilities.

Sketches

A lot of time was spent in this process, as I went in many directions to see how crazy things could get, & I was quite happy with the outcome.. Towards the end I began to get excited with how I could create a 3D render of the ideas, & I knew some ideas would be worth pursuing, while others were great in sketch form, but either lacked potential or would take a long time to achieve in a polished form.

Photograph Experiments

Bricks:

At home I have old fashioned bricks which can easily be arranged to create various forms, they offer a very typical blocky aesthetic..

Light:

My scissor cutting skills were deployed here to create negative space in paper firstly, next, I had to setup some lighting & painstakingly hold the paper for the camera while keeping the paper from bending.. The negative space basically "cut into" the paper's structural integrity, hence why it became difficult to work with at this point...

Photography Trail:

A specialised photography app on my smartphone was used for this. Things started off with a simple round mark that was photographed, & then with the appropriate settings configured already, a slow exposure mode effect became initiated as I moved the phone to slowly capture the desired effect !

"TYPE" titles

By this stage, it was now time to narrow down my options & choose which to go ahead with, plus, I finally had the joy of creating 3D renders of my sketches! It was likely the nuts & bolts that had the most time spent on it..

Finalists Composition Options

For each finalist, a suitable background with

adequate contrast had to be figured out & explored, it was decided that the cactus was the winner!

I wasn't 100% happy with the accompanied background, so, I created a simple 3D scene & applied a desert texture to that for the final.
